In order to withstand the extreme conditions of competition engines, NGK Racing spark plugs offer the following characteristics:

• Electrode material: most spark plugs use precious metals such as platinum, gold or even palladium for greater longevity and lower voltage requirements.
• Electrode Configurations: Thin center electrodes allow for better sparks and improved ignition sensitivity. Low section ground electrodes further improving spark plug ignition sensitivity.
• Isolating Configurations: These special configurations are used to reduce losses to improve throttle response.

Spark plugs used for racing have to withstand particularly high voltages. Engine speeds reached during a race often exceed 15,000 rpm. The temperature, pressure and vibrations in the combustion chamber are so great that conventional ground electrodes could rupture or melt. This is why racing spark plugs are often fitted with ground electrodes designed specifically for competition, with the most extreme form featuring a ring ground electrode. The spark “jumps” from the center electrode to the ring ground electrode.
